Madagascan creation myth

This recording of the Madagascan creation myth is told in English and describes the myth of how the Malagasy believe the world was created.

The story tells us that the creator God, Zanahanry, who created the earth but left it desolate.

The 'self-creator' Ratovoantany sprouted from the ground and created figures of humans and animals out of clay, but was unable to give them life.

Out of curiosity, Zanahanry descended from heaven and brought the figures to life.

The gods agreed that when these humans and animals died their spirits would return to heaven with Zanahanry and the physical bodies would remain on earth.
