Challenge: Putting on a play

Research

Before you embark on the play, read through the script with the class and encourage them to carry out some research on the characters and the period in which it is set. This will provide them with information about clothing, props and what the characters were like.

Vocabulary

There is some important vocabulary to practice in order to put on this production.

Improvisation

Introduce the skill of improvising. Encourage the pupils to create their own script and interpret the scenes using their own language and expressions.

Costume

As part of their research pupils should find out about the clothing worn in this period. Compare clothing of the different characters and how this relates to status.

Sound

As a class, ask the learners to create a soundscape of a battle scene. What sounds could be heard? Create a series of tableaux images to depict the war in the play.

Emotion

Experiment with exaggerating an emotion. Explore what movements, posture, facial expressions and gesture you use when expressing these emotions.

Finally, stage a performance of the Champollion play in front of an audience.
