Napoleon in Egypt

This recording tells the story of French general Napoleon Bonaparte and his 1798 expedition to Egypt. It is in English with some phrases in French.

In military terms the expedition led by Napoleon was not successful but the army was accompanied by 167 scientists and artists.

They described everthing they discovered and explored - ancient tombs, temples and mummies - and the 20 volumes of writings and pictures they published form the basis of modern Egyptology.

Napoleon instructed his soldiers not to destroy ancient buildings and artefacts. In fact one of them - Pierre-Francois Bouchard - discovered the most famous artefact of all, the Rosetta Stone.
