Languages Open Day at University of Stirling

Venue: University of Stirling

Event Date: 11/06/2019 09:00 - 17:00

The French and Spanish & Latin American programmes at the University of Stirling would like to invite the teachers and senior pupils studying French and/or Spanish at Higher or Advanced Higher level to attend a special day of lectures and classes at the University on Tuesday 11 June. Pupils will be able to find out what studying languages at university is like, what makes our languages programmes at Stirling distinctive, and what kinds of careers they will prepare them for. They will also have the opportunity to meet current and former students and hear about their experiences, particularly of studying abroad.

For teachers, we are offering a bespoke Continued Professional Development session, aimed at fostering discussions about the challenges posed by assessment and feedback of pupils’ work in French or Spanish & Latin American culture, film and literature. This CPD session will also give our Stirling colleagues a chance to discuss the transition from secondary school language learning to the University context and to benefit from the expertise of the teachers in this domain.

The day will take place at the University of Stirling’s Pathfoot Building. Provisionally, it will run from 10am-3.30pm, with exact timings to be confirmed. There is no charge for the day, but pupils and teachers should bring a packed lunch. The event is supported by the Division of Literature and Languages at the University of Stirling and the Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France (ASMCF).

French and Spanish at Stirling are highly regarded: Spanish is currently ranked 2nd in Scotland and French 3rd in Scotland, and both in the top 20 in the UK, by the Complete University Guide 2019. Our staff are distinguished researchers with international reputations, and Stirling students have excellent prospects: we are 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK for graduate employability, with almost 97% of our graduates in employment or further study within six months of graduating (HESA 2016).

We hope that your school will be interested in this initiative, and would be very happy to provide more details about it. Teachers may contact us directly by email – cristina.johnston@stir.ac.uk (for French) or peter.baker@stirling.ac.uk (for Spanish) - either for more details or to register. The deadline for registration is Monday 20 May.

Please note that numbers will be limited to a maximum of 10 pupils per school.
