Event Date: 27/10/2014 - 31/10/2014

Calling all local authority postholders with a 1+2 and/or Primary Languages remit! If you are the go-to-person in your authority for designing and delivering what might have previously been called MLPS training, then this is the ideal opportunity for you.

Education Scotland, in partnership with SCILT is hosting a week-long course in Glasgow from Monday 27th to Friday 31st October. A maximum of two participants must be nominated by the QIO in their local authority who has responsibility for languages, and they will already have SCQF 6 (Higher or equivalent) in a language other than English. The strategies and ideas under discussion will be completely transferrable, though for the purposes of this course, exemplification of pedagogy and the resources used will be in French.

After the course there is an expectation that delegates will go on to EITHER design and lead the Primary Language Learning (PLL) training in their authority OR commission the design and delivery of the PLL training in their authority.

By the end of the course, trainers will be able to identify:

  • the format of their own primary language course
  • the content of their own PLL course in terms of grammar, cultural content and progression in the 4 significant skill areas of listening, talking, reading and writing
  • how they will develop teachers’ language and pedagogical skills
  • effective use of ICT in teaching and to reinforce and refresh teachers’ own language skills
  • how to use, adapt and create resources to suit local circumstances

Bed and breakfast accommodation will be provided free of charge to participants coming from beyond a 50 mile radius of the university. This can be extended to include the night of Friday 31st should those delegates wish to attend the annual SALT conference taking place in the University of Strathclyde on Saturday 1st November. Lunch will be included for all participants each day.

If you'd like to find out more about the Scottish Association for Language Teaching (SALT) Conference and book a place you can do so via the Online Shop.  Or to find out more about the organisation itself visit the SALT website.

In order to register a local authority’s interest, QIOs are asked to contact e.mclean@strath.ac.uk before Thursday 2nd October.

Once a local authority has registered an interest, the nominated participant(s) will receive a link to a sign up page on Eventbrite. Once registered to ‘Train the Trainer’, participants will receive further course updates in the run-up to the start of the autumn session on Monday 27th October.
