Janette graduated from the University of Glasgow (a long time ago!) with a degree in French and German. After training at Moray House College of Further Education, she worked as a language teacher in various secondary schools, mainly in Ayrshire, before being appointed as Principal Teacher, and latterly as Faculty Leader.

In addition to her teaching commitments, Janette has also worked extensively with SQA, in various capacities over the years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience of SQA procedures, particularly in Higher French.

She was also employed for several years as an Associate Tutor at the University of Strathclyde, where she shared her passion for languages and her experiences of life in the classroom with students of modern languages – a role she enjoyed hugely!

Janette joined SCILT as a Professional Development Officer in 2012.

At the core of Janette’s work is delivering effective CLPL workshops to secondary colleagues. Her particular focus is on supporting secondary colleagues in the implementation of the 1+2 policy and on delivering effective practice in the senior phase.

A major focus of Janette’s work is in developing business partnerships with schools through SCILT’s Business Language Champions initiative. This initiative helps raise the profile of languages in both schools and in the business community and allows learners to see the relevance of language learning in a real life context. Many of the pupils involved have gone on to achieve the SQA Modern Languages for Life and Work award through this initiative.

Janette is currently working closely with various Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce groups across the country to help forge further links with the business community. This collaboration has allowed SCILT and CISS to build on the successful series of Business Brunches which they have organised in previous years.

Janette also works closely with Project Trust, a charitable organisation which sends young people to volunteer on a variety of projects in countries in Africa, Asia and South America. The volunteers help support the Language Linking, Global Thinking initiative in which they correspond with a class in a school and share their experience of living and working in another country and learning another language. On their return, the volunteers help support promotional events in schools.

Please contact Janette if you require further information on any of these initiatives.
