Join EU staff and language professionals and watch a web-streamed debate in Brussels on the challenges of multilingualism in schools, business and society.

The conference takes place on 25 September 2015 between 12:15 and 14:00 CET. You will have the choice between 24 different languages – a unique opportunity to experience the skills of the European Commission's simultaneous interpreters.

The conference will open with a message from Vice-President Kristalina Georgieva , who will highlight the central role of languages for the European project and discuss the implications of running a multilingual organisation. Vice-President Ioan Mircea Paşcu MEP will give the European Parliament's point of view. Other speakers include:

  • Alex Rawlings , young polyglot/entrepreneur; who will give his own personal view on why languages matter
  • Nathalie Auger from the University of Montpellier, France, who will explain how linguistic diversity can make French lessons particularly interesting and efficient
  • Maurice Crul from the University of Amsterdam, who will talk about how linguistic super-diversity influences school education and the European labour market

The debate will be moderated by Shada Islam , journalist, writer and Policy Director at the think tank "Friends of Europe".
