Scotland's Universities and the 1+2 Language Policy

On 6 May 2015, as part of the Engage with Strathclyde week, SCILT and UCMLS held an event that attracted over 130 participants from schools, local authorities, cultural organisations and universities across the country.

During her keynote speech Professor Do Coyle from Aberdeen University outlined the need for the establishment of a Scotland-wide research network across the sectors related to languages, language pedagogy and language policy generally, and the 1+2 language policy specifically. The SCILT team then outlined a range of existing projects in support of the Scottish Government’s 1 + 2 language policy that could be expanded through collaboration with partners from the University Council for Modern Languages Scotland (UCMLS).

Delegates were given the opportunity to discuss in regional groups on how this cross-sector collaboration on research and language promotion could work in practice. Their feedback in the plenary indicated that they were keen to establish regional networks where practitioners from across the educational sectors can share best practice and discuss pertinent issues including collaborative research and enquiry in languages and language education.

There will be an update on developments arising from the conference on the SCILT website.
